How much solar panels cost depends on system size
Residential solar is usually sold as one big number, but that number only means something once you know how large the system is. Two homes can both pay "$25,000" and get very different deals, because one system might produce far more electricity than the other. The unit that lets you compare fairly is the price per watt.
A watt (W) is the system's rated capacity. One kilowatt equals 1,000 watts. Divide the comparable solar-only pre-incentive price by the system's DC watts to calculate price per watt. System size must come from the home's usage, roof, goals, and production assumptions rather than a generic house-size range.
Why price per watt is the clearest way to compare
Total price on its own tells you very little. A $22,000 quote can be a worse deal than a $27,000 quote if the cheaper one is a much smaller system. Because the sticker price is what most people react to, many quotes lead with the total or the monthly payment rather than the $/W — which is exactly why doing the division yourself is worth two minutes.
Consider two quotes for the same home, where the pricier system is actually the better deal per watt:
- Quote A: $22,000 for a 6 kW system = about $3.67 per watt
- Quote B: $27,000 for a 9 kW system = about $3.00 per watt
What the published national distribution shows
Quote B costs more up front but buys more power at a better rate — that is the whole point of comparing on $/W instead of sticker price. So what counts as a fair number?
Berkeley Lab's 2025 data update reports that host-owned, stand-alone U.S. residential systems installed in 2024 ran from about $3.00/W at the 20th percentile to $5.20/W at the 80th percentile, with a $4.00/W median, before incentives. The distribution includes cash and loan-financed systems and excludes paired storage, third-party-owned systems, and self-installs.
That is a historical national distribution, not a current local quote or a verdict. Equipment, roof and electrical work, permitting, financing, and local conditions can all explain a difference. Use it to frame questions and compare like-for-like scope, not to label a proposal good or bad.
How solar cost per watt varies by state
Location can affect labor, permitting, competition, roof scope, interconnection work, and equipment availability. The current public price screen does not pretend to measure those state-by-state differences; it uses one national historical distribution and labels that limitation.
The state pages add exact EIA residential electricity-rate context, which affects savings arithmetic but is not an installed-price quote. Ask installers to itemize local permitting, roof, electrical, equipment, and financing differences in writing.
What drives your solar cost up or down
Once you know your $/W, it helps to understand why it lands where it does. A handful of factors do most of the work:
- Equipment: exact panel, inverter, racking, and monitoring choices can change scope and price.
- Roof complexity: a steep pitch, multiple roof faces, an aging roof, or long wiring runs all add labor.
- Sales and subcontracting structure: ask who sells, installs, warrants, and services the system and how each item appears in the contract price.
- Financing: request the cash and financed contract prices for identical scope, then ask for an itemized explanation of any difference rather than assuming its cause.
- Batteries and add-ons: a battery can add a substantial amount and changes the $/W math, so compare quotes with and without it.
What happened to the 30% federal tax credit in 2026
IRS guidance states that the Residential Clean Energy Credit is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. It had previously provided a 30% credit for qualifying expenditures during the applicable period.
If a proposal still subtracts that federal credit from a 2026 expenditure, ask for revised cash, payment, and savings figures without it. State, local, and utility programs follow separate rules. How to tell if your solar quote is priced fairly
Before you start, remember that every production, savings, and payback figure in a quote is an estimate that depends on your specific roof, shading, utility tariff, export compensation, usage, and financing. Confirm material details with licensed professionals. A structured check can calculate your $/W, apply a national historical screen when comparable, label the production evidence, and hand you questions for the installer.
To pressure-test a quote yourself in about five minutes:
- Find the system size in watts (kilowatts × 1,000) and the total cash price before incentives.
- Divide the price by the watts to get your cost per watt.
